19.02.2016 | Heading: Information

Gonorrhea – the oldest and one of the most common STDs. In the Old Testament, Moses mentioned the contagious nature of this disease (Leviticus, 15); Scientists of Ancient Greece also wrote about it – Plato, Aristotle and Hippocrates. It received its modern name from the Greek physician Ga-Lena in the 2nd century A.D.. IN 1879 r. Albert Neiser discovered the causative agent of gonorrhea – bacteria (gonococci), named after him Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Penicillin use, proved to be an effective treatment for gonorrhea, reduced its distribution in the 1940-1950s., but to 1980 r. its frequency in the USA has reached epidemic proportions. In subsequent years, there was a steady, although a relatively slow decline in incidence (rice. 19.1) – from 1 million. established cases in 1980 r. to about 750 thous. in 1989 r. (Handfield, 1984;
Centers for Disease Control, 1990). This is largely due to the fact, that due to the spread of AIDS as homosexuals, so bisexuals began to be more careful during sexual intercourse and, accordingly, less likely to get sick with gonorrhea (Judson, 1983; Holmes et al., 1989). According to most scientists, the number of gonorrhea infections in the United States is actually close to 2 million. in year, since less than half of all cases are registered (Handsfield, 1984).
